Abstract

The authors describe nine categories of behavioral reactivity (temperament) that were identified in the New York Longitudinal Study: activity level, rhythmicity, approach/withdrawal, adaptability, intensity of reaction, threshold of responsiveness, quality of mood, distractibility. and attention span and persistence. Using observations and data gathered on children in a Ghanaian nursery school, an Israeli kibbutz and American nursery schools and kindergarten, they illustrate the important role temperamental individuality in the child's adaptation to these group care situations. In particular, the role of temperament in the achievement of various developmental tasks is considered in the hope of helping educators attain a more individualized approach to early group care.
