Abstract

Youth who exhibit antisocial behavior or have been involved with the juvenile justice system represent a unique population of students who are at an elevated risk of school and life-long failure. Proactive systems of positive behavioral support (PBS) involve levels of prevention that are systematically applied across all students in a setting. These coordinated efforts have been demonstrated to be effective in decreasing problem behavior and increasing student achievement in public school settings. The purpose of this paper is to describe how effective systems of PBS can be used in alternative educational settings, either within or outside of public schools, as a means of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention for at-risk and adjudicated youth. Special concerns and specific strategies for this population are discussed across the range of placement alternatives. The case is made that effective systems of PBS provide a mechanism to develop and adopt supports that link a variety of resources and service providers for effective prevention and intervention efforts.
