Abstract

This article focuses on crash tests performed on vehicles equipped with lithium ion batteries, specifically reporting on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)'s May 2011 testing of the Chevrolet Volt. A five-star rating was given for the Volt's frontal and side impact vehicle crashworthiness and occupant protection. Following a fire at MGA Research, Inc., laboratory that was determined to have originated with the Volt, a forensic inspection was launched and its battery packs were tested. The forensic inspections identified possible effects on the battery from the impact and rollover that occurred during original crash test. (TRID)
