Abstract

As in-vehicle route guidance and traffic information systems develop, the need to have comprehensive guidelines for their design, installation and use has become a major issue. This paper reproduces a draft Code of Practice for the design, manufacture, installation and use of in-vehicle information systems commissioned by the Department of Transport. Responsibilities relating to the employer, installer, hire company and driver are listed. Areas covered include the avoidance of hazards, avoidance of distraction, compliance with standards, provision of instructions, training and time allowed for glancing at displays.
