Abstract

Nuremberg is surrounded by highways. A high number of vehicles enter the city centre and bring along congestion and air pollution. Since the early 1970s, it was hence started to gradually pedestrianize the historic city centre. During a site visit in Nuremberg West city, first impressions were captured to understand the current situation of the neighbourhood. Several problems were found that might be relevant for the future development. Those are inconsistent bicycle network, lack of parking opportunities and separation effects. A first analysis was carried out in order to identify possible impediments. To attract more residents to cycling, three following main measures will be focused on in this plan to reach a complete network in West city. These are 1) Proving Tempo-30-Zones to support a finer-grained bikeway network; 2) Developing main bicycle routes for commuting and as connectors and 3) Ensuring access to common destinations. Soft measures must be taken throughout the year by organizing events and programs to promote biking, to increase awareness of people and for changing travel behaviour. The willingness of the West city is needed and different measures should be finalised to guarantee a successful bike share in West city.
