Abstract

With a knowledge of the mean annual ground temperatures, the general lithology at a given location and a regional distribution of the geothermal flux from the earth's interior, it is possible to make reasonable estimates of the presence or absence of permafrost and its thickness. The prediction is complicated by changes of the local surface temperature in the past due to a variety of factors ranging from changes of climate to forest fires.


Connaissant les températures moyennes annuelles au sol, la lithologie générale d'un site donné et la distribution régionale du flux géothermal il est possible de faire une estimation raisonnablement bonne de la présence ou de l'absence de permafrost et de son épaisseur. La prévision est rendue difficile par des changements de la température de surface locale dans le passé, sous l'influence d'une variété de phénomènes allant des changements climatiques aux feux de forêt.
