Abstract

The article discusses human trafficking in Australia. It informs that trafficking related legislation was first introduced in Australia in 1999 by bringing amendments to the Criminal Code Act 1995 and the Criminal Code Amendment Act 1999 created the offences of slavery, sexual servitude and deceptive recruiting but failed to define trafficking in persons. 184 victims of trafficking were provided with assistance through the Support for Trafficked Persons (STP) Program. It also informs that factors such as income disparity, poverty and migration status contribute to the risk of an individual finding themselves trafficked for various types of exploitation.
