Abstract

Death by suicide among adolescents continues to be a worldwide concern. It is estimated that approximately 200, 000 teenagers end their lives annually. Suicide remains the third leading cause of death among adolescents between the ages 13 and 19 and the second leading cause of death among 10-20 year olds. Suicide attempts occur more frequently during adolescents than at other periods of human development. This stage is a critical period of growth and development. Adjusting to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual issues, pose tremendous burden on the adolescent who is trying to make meaning of all the changes that are occurring simultaneously. The impact of this problem has become a global public health concern; therefore, preventative measures are urgently needed to prevent self-destructive behaviors. A review of the literature will highlight the current statistics related to adolescent suicide attempt and suicide, associating factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management, and preventative measures.
