Abstract

Few social sciences studies focused on the paradoxical grounding of Weber's bureaucratic model torn apart between the objectivity of the State--on which legal authority is based--and the subjectivity of public officers--which constantly threatens to overstretch this framework. How this paradox may be solved in the case of civil servants moreover playing with emotions in their relationship with the public? The ethnographic study of a police department in charge of procuring laws enforcement questions the social meaning of emotions in public officers interactions with target populations. It reveals an institutional role which induces--and prescribes to police agents--specific forms of emotional work through which law takes shape.

Le paradoxe au fondement même du modèle bureaucratique weberien entre l'objectivité à construire pour que se mette en place l'ordre légal et la subjectivité des fonctionnaires qui menace toujours de se répandre a peu fait l'objet d'investigations scientifiques. Comment résoudre ce paradoxe quand les fonctionnaires en question mettent, de surcroît, en scène des émotions vis-à-vis de leurs publics ? L'ethnographie d'un service de police chargé de la lutte contre le proxénétisme permet d'interroger la signification sociale des émotions dans les interactions entre agents de l'État et populations-cibles. Elle dévoile un rôle institutionnel qui induit et prescrit aux agents de l'institution des formes singulières de travail émotionnel à travers lesquelles le droit prend corps.
