Abstract

This article describes the development of the Carlson Psychological Survey. It reviews the problems that existing psychological scales have with offender populations and shows how the CPS was developed with items and scales intended expressly for offenders. Response biases were controlled through item selection based on endorsement frequencies, desirability ratings, and faking studies. Norms are provided from samples from six different populations. A correlational comparison with the MMPI is discussed, and two validity comparisons are presented. The article concludes with a description of one of eighteen personality types which have been identified by the test.
