Abstract

Differential findings exist in the relationship between locus of control and drug abuse. One factor which may explain these is the demand cues inherent in the test settings. The results of this research with incarcerated offenders indicate that test instructions aimed at heightening social desirability artificially inflate I-E scores. In prison settings where clinicians are charged with obtaining accurate psychological data to plan treatment efforts, the effects of social desirability must be recognized. No significant difference in locus of control between drug abusers and nonabusers was found.
