Abstract

This research provides empirical data from the official statistics on crimes committed by minors in the Canary Islands between 2000 and 2009, linking the obtained data with the total juvenile population in the Canary Islands between 14 and 17 years old. Thus, this study intends to amend an important gap in the empirical knowledge of this part of the population in the Canary Islands, observing in particular the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency in this territory and contributing with information that may help adjust the future design of criminal policies in this field. La investigación que se presenta aporta datos empíricos procedentes de las estadísticas oficiales sobre comisión de delitos por parte de los menores en Canarias entre los años 2000 y 2009, relacionando las cifras obtenidas con la totalidad de la población juvenil canaria entre 14 y 17 años. Se pretende así cubrir un vacío importante en el conocimiento empírico sobre este sector de población en Canarias, observando en su justa medida el fenómeno delictivo juvenil en este territorio y aportando cifras desde la criminología que permitan ajustar el diseño futuro de políticas criminales en este ámbito.
