Abstract

The article discusses the controversy surrounding the self-strangulation death of 19-year-old female inmate Ashley Smith in a Canadian correctional facility on October 19, 2007, including information on the Correctional Service of Canada and Correctional Investigator of Canada Howard Sapers' analysis of Smith's reportedly preventable death. The Canadian judicial system's treatment of adolescent girls is addressed, along with Child Protection and Youth Courts. The author's experiences with female juvenile offenders at the Ontario Court of Justice are also examined.
