Abstract

This article presents research findings on the impact of dispatch communication and in-vehicle devices on law enforcement officer effectiveness during patrol tasks. An experimental study is conducted to measure how auditory and visual information impacts officer driving behavior and attention to the environment. The study does not reveal any significant negative impact of the in-vehicle devices tested on either driving performance or on situation awareness, and the authors suggest that in-vehicle technology can even enhance driver performance.
