Abstract

This article reports the results of an experimental evaluation of the water flow thickness in sheet flow, which is necessary to quantify hydroplaning risk potential in a rainfall event. It then reports the findings of an experimental evaluation of hydroplaning threshold speed, which involved a Locked Wheel Skid Tester to measure the average Skid Number of a paved surface. Among the results are the findings that pavement friction reduces as water film thickness and speed increase, and that drag force decreases with the onset of hydroplaning.
