Abstract

Links between both reporting and portrayal of suicide in the media and subsequent suicidal behaviour are being increasingly acknowledged. The importance of this topic has resulted in its inclusion in most national suicide prevention strategies. It is vital, however, that initiatives to address this influence are based as far as possible on research evidence. At the Centre for Suicide Research at Oxford University we have conducted a systematic review of the worldwide research literature in this field. This includes both studies examining media influences and those in which efforts have been made to reduce their influence. In this presentation the results of the review concerning media influences will be summarised in order to provide the background for discussion of the importance of the Internet in relation to suicidal behaviour and its prevention.
