Abstract

Psychological autopsy of suicide in the Army of Serbia and Montenegro has been used from 1998. Psychological autopsy involves all professional military staff (officers, professional soldiers and regular soldiers), civilians and students of military academies and schools. The aim of our study was to give an example of the psychological autopsy of a suicide committed by a civilian employed in the army. The members of a suicide-prevention expert team, a psychiatrist and psychologist, immediately, within the first 24 hours after a suicide, go to the military unit where a suicide takes place to get information from colleagues, commanders, doctors and a unit psychologist. Psychotherapeutic intervention in the crises following a suicide, is applied to ease the emotional tension among the friends of a suicide committer. After that, we visit the home of a suicide committer and talk to his family in order to help them, and explain the possible motives of his suicide. A combination of collecting information given by the friends of a suicide committer and the members of his family, and psychotherapeutic intervention in the crises are equally effective during psychological autopsy which is important for further application of the suicide-prevention program in the military environment.
