Abstract

A serious public-health problem in Slovenia is premature mortality due to suicide. From a public-health point of view it is important to know, that the biggest contribution to all premature years of life lost is due to suicide. The purpose of this analyze was to present two regions in Slovenia in the year 2003 which were the most affected with premature mortality due to suicide. Our goal was to set up a base for evaluation effectiveness of planned preventive programmes and activities, which would help to prevent deaths due to suicide. The second goal was to estimate suicide connected costs. The number of deaths due to suicide was calculated from mortality data. We linked data bases on hospitalizations, issued prescriptions and sick-leave through personal identification numbers.. These databases were also a base for calculating costs. In the calculation we included direct and indirect costs, linked to the person who had died due to suicide. We estimated direct costs, which were linked with medical treatment (outpatient services, medicines and hospital services), indirect costs, which were linked with lost productivity (prematurely life lost, discounting future earnings, funeral costs) and sick leave compensation costs. We estimated indirect costs by the Human-Capital method. The Slovenian suicidal index, for the year 2003, was 28,15 (562 cases). In the region of Celje the index was 35,05 (105 cases) and in the region of Ravne the index was 47,39(35 cases). In the region of Celje the premature mortality due to suicide was 28,39 and in the region of Ravne was 42,21. Deaths due to suicide presented 2,9% of all deaths and 8,3% of all premature deaths. In Slovenia the number of YPLL due to suicide was 8.553 years, YPLL in the region of Celje was 1.402 years and YPLL in the region of Ravne was 588 years. The number of YPLL in the region of Celje was 16,4% and the number of YPLL in the region of Ravne was 6,87%. A person, who died premature, lost, on average, 21,12 years of life. That means equally loss of productivity. In the region of Celje a person, who died prematurely, lost, on average, 19,21 years and in the region of Ravne 21,76 years of life, which is more than annual average. Estimated costs in the year 2003 in the region of Celje and Ravne were 15.743.465 euro. Direct costs were 183.408 euro, indirect costs were 15.560.057 euro. Indirect costs thus contributed 98,8% of all costs.
