Abstract

The Austrian guidelines on reporting of suicides were one of the first such instruments, developed in the 1980s. They were used in the Viennese subway-suicide-study and contributed to a change in reporting, which correlated with a subsequent decrease in subway-suicides. History and further development of the Austrian guidelines are highlighted. Furthermore the guidelines of the German Association for Suicide Prevention are presented and described. Both guidelines can be downloaded from the internet and are used in a rather unstructured way by disseminating them among specialists as well as journalists, and by recommending their discussion to media professionals after extensive reporting.
