Abstract

Suicide is a major public health problem and the number of suicide victims has exceeded 30,000 a year since 1998 in Japan. Suicide rate is almost 25/100,000, which are remarkably high numbers among advanced countries. To examine the effectiveness of a novel multimodal community intervention program to prevent suicide and suicide attempt in Japan (NOCOMIT-J), a community intervention trial by J-MISP (Japanese Multimodal Intervention Trials for Suicide Prevention) has been launched in 2005. This research project is one of the strategic research projects funded by The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. J-MISP will implement the intervention among populations of statistically sufficient size (670,000 total). The intervention programs, to be conducted for 3.5 years, included the following measures: raising the awareness of suicide prevention among community residents, increasing opportunities for mental health consultation, facilitating access to treatment for depression, and promoting increased communication on mental health, for example, by distributing leaflet to all households. In additions, high-risk subjects would be screened by the community survey. We hope that the results of this trial will help to develop effective strategies to reduce future suicide rate in Japan.
