Abstract

Russia has had one of the highest suicide rates in the world since 1970-s. Suicide rates in the Archangels region is above the rate for the Russian federation. Much is known about epidemiology of suicidal behavior in the Archangels region. The suicide rate is much higher among men than women and higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The nenet population has a higher suicide rate than the Russian. Known risk factors are alcohol abuse and health factors including psychiatric illness. Psychosocial factors like unemployment and economic problems play a role. Epidemiological knowledge on suicide in the Archangels region will be presented. Experiences related to initiate a Crisis Center in Arkhangelsk and education of multidisciplinary staff will be presented. Strategies for focused and effective interventions in the future will be discussed. Since 1995 there has been collaboration between the psychiatric department at the University Hospital of North Norway, Troms and the Mental Hospital in Archangels.The workshop has been planned by a joint group of Russians and Norwegians.
