Abstract

Unipolar depression is heading the list of disorders responsible for the global burden of disease in the developed countries (Murray & Lopez 1997). Affective disorders during childhood and adolescents are a risk factor for any kind of mental disorders during later stages of life. Depressive disorders are often related to suicidal behaviour, thus highlighting the importance of interventions aiming at the prevention and treatment of depression. Since April 2004 the "European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD)" is committed to the care of depressed patients and prevention of suicidality in Europe. 18 partners from all over Europe do address these topics by utilising community-based networks, conducting parallel intervention programmes on four different levels. The efficacy of this approach has been proven to be effective within a pilot study conducted in Nuremberg (Germany) in 2001/2002 (Hegerl et al. 2006). Experiences and materials gained within these regional interventions are utilised as models for other regions in the different European countries. The presentation will give an overview on concrete interventions established within EAAD, pointing out best practice models which might also be used by other interested groups. Future prospects will give an idea of additional planned activities within EAAD.
