Abstract

Although the rate for suicide in the general population has decreased, this is not the case in the elderly (+65 years). For men over 80 and women between 65-79, the rate is increasing. The county of Vejle, Denmark, accordingly decided to enhance suicide prevention by educating key persons. Purposes 1) To qualify key persons in the home care to ensure that health care workers have special knowledge about elderly suicide. The key persons will have the task of supporting the elderly, other health care workers, and the volunteers 2) To establish a formal collaboration between general practitioners, vicars, and volunteers to enhance prevention and intervention of suicidal behaviour Tasks 1) To qualify health care personnel by providing knowledge about risk factors, communication and suicidal elderly 2) To establish a formal collaboration in the community with external partners 3) Action plans that professionals can relate to in case of a suicide and to provide for courses 4) Support professionals in the primary sector 5) Knowledge of relevant support for the suicidal elderly and the bereaved. Method: Intensive training and supervision. Result: In 2005, 27 key persons completed the training course.
