Abstract

Recently, an alarming increase of deliberate self-harm among psychiatrically treated youth has been observed. The objective of the study was the assessment of the relationship between self-harm and the presence of certain mental disorders. Material: The population studied consisted of two groups undergoing psychiatric treatment: one group aged 14-19, the other aged over 20 and a randomly chosen control group of healthy students. Conclusion: Self-harm was present in about 30 per cent of the psychiatrically treated youth and in about 15% of both psychiatrically treated adults and healthy youth. In the studied group of youth the self-harm was more frequent in girls, while in the group of the adults - in men. Among the subjects who were treated psychiatrically and committed acts of self-harm, regardless the age, the most frequent mental disorders were disturbances of mood and emotions.
