Abstract

Aim: The aim of this research was to gain a better insight into the moral responsibility of persons i.e. patients who have attempted suicide. Persons i.e. patients were analyzed who were examined and treated in the Psychiatric Clinic of KBC Rijeka due to a suicide attempt in the randomly chosen period (June 1999 to November 2000). Methods: A sociodemografic questionnaire, A questionnaire about characteristics of suicide attempt, A questionnaire about psychic disturbances and A questionnaire about suicide related statements were used to assess the mentioned persons i.e. patients. Results: There were 45 persons i.e. patients. Women participated somewhat more-24 (53%). The majority of them had not made any suicidal plans - 32 (71%). They suffered from depression and they took some kind of medication to treat it - 27 (60%). Most of them stated that "person who commits suicide doesn't only kill himself but also the people around him" - 40 (89%). They considered that "one man's freedom is more important than the preservation of bare life" - 35(78%) but 29 or 64% of them also answered affirmatively to "after Your experience do you still think that committing suicide is the only way out of Your present situation". Conclusion: The results of this research show that suicide is not only an act of a desperate being but also a cry for love and its meaning.
