Abstract

Veterans suffering form chronic PTSD have an increased risk of suicidal behavior. We have decided to investigate the influence of spirituality (measured by Spiritual Well-Being scale) and religiosity (measured by Religious Orientation Scale) in veterans suffered form chronic PTSD (measured by Suicidal Assessment Scale). Diagnosis of PTSD and comorbid psychiatric diagnosis was confirmed according to DSM-IV criteria. In conclusion, our findings support the hypothesis of an association between suicidal behavior and reduced levels of religiosity and spirituality. Identifying these predictors of suicide might help to improve the prediction and prevention of suicide. Further prospective studies are needed to investigate whether these parameters might be used as the early predictors of suicidal behavior.
