Abstract

The one-number-to-call system is the latest and most effective tool in the continuing campaign to prevent damage to underground facilities by excavating equipment. Another project that should help to reduce such damage it the use of standard colors for the stakes that are used to mark the locations of underground facilities. In such a system, each type of utility is assigned a color for marking its facilities. (Unless the colors are standardized, utilities that serve more than one state, county, or area would need to stock all colors of markers, which could lead to errors in staking.) Contractors and highway maintenance workers would recognize the uniform colors and be able to identify the type of facility.
