Abstract

A survey was made of the socioeconomic characteristics and travel behavior of students in Dutchess County New York, and the subsequent analysis attempted to describe the associative relation between trip rates and grade level, household size, car ownership and trip purpose, mode choice, and day of the week. The survey sample was obtained by using cluster design. The major conclusions of the survey are listed. Most of these results were predictable. The trip-making rate for boys are higher on weekdays and lower on weekends than the rate for girls. Trip rates for weekdays and Saturdays are similar but the trip purposes are different. Car owernship does not have a significant effect on weekday trip rates for students unless the family owns 3 or more cars. Further findings regarding bususe, trip length and the availability of transport are briefly discussed.
