Abstract

One of the actions identified in the national suicide prevention strategy for England was to develop guidance on action to be taken at hotspots for suicide. The National Institute for Mental Health in England, who are responsible for implementation of the strategy, has commissioned the development of guidance which will: help in the identification of particular hotspots for suicide provide a list of possible types of hotspots including bridges, railway stations and other locations on the rail network, car parks, cliffs and other high places and certain beauty spots suggest some interventions or measures that could be undertaken to decrease the risk of suicide at particular locations. These could include physical measures i.e. barriers, improved CCTV, enclosures at bridges and multi-storey car parks and promotional measures i.e. posters urging people to seek help or support, telephone helplines etc. highlight the evidence from research that such measures (but not all will be evidence based) can save lives. The guidance will be produced in a short pocket booklet form and on a CD ROM.
