Abstract

The high level of suicides in the Russian North is influenced by the same factors as for all the country of Russia. To better realise suicide prevention programs in Russia we need to create a long-term basis including promotion of mental resilience, increasing the proficiency of health and social services, reducing domestic violence and substance abuse, etc. We can mention three levels of prevention: national, group and individual level. Every level has its own "table of contents". The National level of suicide prevention is the most expressive and wide. The objectives of national level of suicide prevention are the following: 1)Information and media support (public campaigns); 2) Involvement the NGO, professionals and volunteers; 3) Providing the appropriate mental health treatment for suicidal persons with underlying mental disorder or substance abuse; 4) Development the regional suicide prevention programs; 5) The approaches to reduce alcohol-related harm; 6) Evidence-based suicide prevention programs in schools, universities, risk services (army, police, etc.), penitentiary institutions; 7) Professional capacity building in suicide prevention (training for medical and social workers, police, rescues, correctional workers, etc.); 8) Training programs for families of at risk persons; 9) National programs to reduce accessibility of lethal means; 10) Suicide-risk screening in primary health care; 11) Early access to adequate mental health services for persons treated for trauma, sexual assault or physical abuse in emergency departments; 12) Development of suicide prevention guidelines on the National level; and 13) National suicide research programs. The detailed strategic plan and related activities need to be the topic not only for the professional discussion, but also of discussion by the whole community.
