Abstract

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among impulsivity, mental disorder, and suicide with a sample of rural young Chinese.

METHODS: Subjects were 392 consecutively recruited male and female suicides aged 15-34 years and 416 community male and female controls of the same age range sampled in rural China. The case-control data were obtained using psychological autopsy method with structured and semi-structured instruments.

RESULTS: Dysfunctional impulsivity was a significant risk factor regardless of mental disorder in rural China.

CONCLUSIONS: Dysfunctional impulsivity is a potential area for further study of suicidal behavior. The suicide prevention efforts in rural China may address impulsivity.
