Abstract

This article is concerned with the manner in which knowledge needed for urban design is obtained, and with possible improvements in this respect. An empirical exploration of communication and co‐operation between researchers and designers in The Netherlands is reported upon, and conclusions are drawn as to strong and weak points. The second part of the article describes, on the basis of recent theoretical advances and of practical experience in spatial planning as well as other fields, possibilities for improving knowledge exchange.
