Abstract

This article describes research by the UC Berkeley Traffic Safety Center examining the effects that California's Safe Routes to School Program may have had on safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. It looked at surveys and interviews at school sites that used grants from the state to change areas around schools to make them safer for non-motorized travel. Some 125 projects were part of the evaluation, and well over half the projects included sidewalk improvements as part of what was typically a bundle of improvements under the program. A key finding was that, even as the sites saw increased walking and biking, the injury rates for those who walked and biked did not rise. However, there is need for more comprehensive and more standardized data and more information to enable measuring exposure and thus determine risks associated with these modes of travel to school.
