Abstract

Approximately 80% of college students drink alcohol; almost half of these students reporting that they drink to get drunk and over 22% engage in heavy episodic drinking. Heavy alcohol consumption during the transition from high school to college is associated with negative personal and academic consequences. Sixty-seven freshmen volunteered to participate. We measured alcohol use during high school and since entering university, negative consequences of alcohol use, and academic functioning. College weekly drinking mediates the relationship between high school and college consequences associated with alcohol use. This is true for overall consequences and specifically for academic consequences related to alcohol.
