Abstract |
This article reports on a study that evaluated the effects of driving experience and driver age on the perceptual processes that are involved in the detection of a potential future collision with a preceding vehicle. The study included four groups of 12 participants: Group 1 was drivers who have had a driver's license for longer than five years; Group 2 was drivers having their license for less than two years; Group 3 did not possess a driver's license. The participants in Groups 1-3 were all younger than 30 years old; Group 4 consisted of drivers over the age of 65 years who drove regularly. The study included 216 different scenarios of approach at (sufficient or insufficient) constant deceleration towards the preceding vehicle. Participants judged whether the unfolding event would have given rise to a collision or not, using a forced 2-choice task. The results indicated that driving experience did not seem to influence the capacity to detect upcoming collisions, while aging led to a decrease in judgment performance. Compared to younger drivers, older drivers were found to use optical variables differently depending on the presence or absence of environmental structure in the scenarios. Language: fr |
