Abstract

Road safety is both a health and development issue of concern. Road accidents are a human tragedy. It involves high human suffering and monetary costs in terms of untimely deaths, injuries, loss of potential income, etc s. Considering this importance of improving road safety, United Nations has also declared 2011-2020 as the decade of action for road safety with a goal to prevent five million road traffic deaths globally by 2020. Thus, there is an urgent need to take preventive measures to reduce accidents and to develop road safety improvement program. Thus, t his study presents a basic model for improving road safety. This study presents a basic model for formulation of Road Safety Improvement program, in this model there is three major stages i.e. Stage I Accident Investigation and Recording System, stage II Ranking of High Accident Risk Location, Stage III Prioritization of Remedial Safety Measures. Further, this study also presents a sub stage of major stages. Thus, t his study will be useful for Formulation of Road Safety Improvement Program to improve safety on Indian roads.
