Abstract

This document contains major provisions of India's 1987 Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act. "Sati" is defined as the voluntary or involuntary burning or burying alive of any woman along with the body of her deceased husband, any other relative, or thing associated with the husband or relative. An attempt to commit sati or to abet such an attempt is punishable with imprisonment or imposition of a fine. Punishment is also to be imposed on any person who glorifies the practice of sati. The Act gives the Collector or District Magistrate the power to prohibit sati and the power to remove temples and other structures erected to glorify sati. The Collector or District Magistrate may also confiscate funds or property acquired for the glorification of sati.
