Abstract

The process of socialization in a mental health program for incestuous families is described. Treatment is viewed as a means of transmission of new knowledge--about what incest is, why it occurred, what should be done about it--from those who "know" to those who do not. Cultural mechanisms used to socialize participants to the predominant values of the treatment community are analyzed.
