Abstract

: In this fourth paper in the series on the effects and management of senile macular degeneration (SMD), we define and distinguish between the terms ocular disorder, visual impairment, visual disability and visual handicap. We describe the role of the optometrist in the care of a patient with SMD and discuss in detail the wide range of tests available to the optometrist to assess the visual impairment caused by SMD.
