Abstract

A review of the visual standards applicable to the various types of drivers and riders licences in N.S.W. is made and evldence is presented which indicates that the present interval between supervised vision examinations may be too great. Present visual standards are compared to visual standards for other occupations in the transport industry. Details of the visual status of a number of licensed drivers are presented including three who are also elligible for a blind pension. As a means of detecting those licence holders whose vision falls below the required standard it is suggested that a further supervised visual acuity check be conducted at a departmental motor registry at the time of licence renewal immediately following the licence holders 55th birthday.
