Abstract

906 alcohol graphs published in the literature were evaluated to establish the value of the Widmark factor 'r' and its variability. An average 'r' value of 0.75 was found with a single standard deviation of 0.15. Variations of the 'r' value explain differences in the blood alcohol concentration with an equal alcohol challenge and without the necessity of considering the so-called resorption deficit. In the estimation of the maximum blood alcohol concentration from the amount of alcohol ingested e.g. in cases of ingestion after the event, the use of an 'r' value of 0.5 is recommended. In the estimation of the minimum blood alcohol concentration an 'r' value of 1.0 should be used. These calculations render the use of corrections, based on the so-called resorption deficit, unnecessary.
