Abstract

Results of a long-term study between 1990 and 1998 are presented. Its objective was to determine factors capable of identifying learner drivers at risk of future drink driving. This was based on a questionnaire completed by learner drivers in 1990/91 which covered their general habits and attitudes regarding road traffic participation. In 1998, the Federal Traffic Registrations (Verkehrszentralregister) were checked for possible entries for 2595 participants. It revealed that the probability of future drink driving could be predicted on the basis of their drinking habits in the period of attending the driving school (before obtaining the driver's license). Many of the male future drink drivers were already heavy drinkers when they went to driving school. Suggestions are made regarding the means of identification of these at-risk persons and how to influence them by preventive measures.
