James R. Dunn, PhD, is the CI HR-PHAC chair in applied public health and the William Lyon Mackenzie King visiting chair in Canadian studies, at Harvard University (2011‒2012), in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Abstract

There has been a major explosion of research on the built environment and health in the social epidemiology, urban planning, geography and other disciplines over the past several years. The author discusses the effects of children's built environments on healthy child development ‒ a departure from traditional approaches that are focused on child diseases, disorders and the avoidance of hazards and risks in the built environment.
