Abstract

Medical psychological assessment of drunken driving offenders is based on standardised criteria for diagnosis and assessment. In a professional field of cooperation between medical and psychological experts, medical classification systems such as ICD 10 should primarily be applied as a base for diagnosing addiction and harmful use of alcohol. Secondly, constructions of psychological origin as demonstrated by the inability to dissociate alcohol consumption and driving need to be taken into consideration. Current diagnostic requirements to the expert assessments based on the German Driver's License Act (FeV) are presented. It seems to be necessary to extend the alcohol related assessment principles in a revised edition of the German Expert Guidelines for the assessment of driving ability.
