Abstract

Driving (i.e., motorist) skills are very complex, given that they draw not only upon an individual's personality, but also the basic grasp of reality as well as cognitive, technical and environmental factors. An important factor of perception and decision-making are specific cognitive functions which can be assessed using standardised neuropsychological tests. It is noteworthy in this context that the guidelines available in Germany for assessing driving skills provide but a broad framework for these various function tests and need to be revised and/or complemented at the conceptual-theoretical and the decision-making levels. The recent results of neuroscientific research and their implications for assessing driving skills must be taken into account more than they have been so far in order to allow for newer examination methods which are now available as well as for drug abuse-specific disorders.
