Abstract

Sodium hydroxide was observed to have some influence on the determination of urine alcohol concentration using Vidic's vanadium sulfuric acid method. Generally the alcohol concentration is diminished by increasing quantities of added alkali. The addition of a mixture of solid sodium bicarbonate/sodium carbonate (3:1) to the urine samples yielded the best results when compared with the urine alcohol values obtained by gas chromatographic determination.
