Abstract

Enzyme activities of ADH were measured at pH 8.8 and pH 10.8 in the 100,000 g supernatant of liver homogenates derived from 161 dead persons, which were brought to the institute of legal medicine in Cologne. By means of the quotient pH 10.8/pH 8.8 a differentiation was taken between 'typical' and 'atypical' ADH, analogous to the method of v. Wartburg et al.: 8.7% were classified as 'atypical', whereby a division was made at a quotient of 0.6. The 'atypical' enzyme was shown to have an above average activity at pH 8.8. Mean x and standard deviation s of enzyme activities (units/g liver) in the whole material was calculated: pH 8.8 x = 3.06, s = 3.14; pH 10.8 x = 3.40, s = 2.05. Enzyme activities depend on the period of time between death and freezing the material, chronic alcohol abuse and fat content of the liver, whereas no relationship was found in sex, age and acute drunkenness.
