Abstract

The assessment criteria in medico-psychological evaluation of driving aptitude (Beurteilungskriterien in der medizinisch-psychologischen Fahreignungsdiagnostik) are an important milestone in the standardization of procedure and the judgement in medical and psychological expert assessments. By using these criteria in medical assessments on driving ability, comprehensible problem solving strategies for a change in alcohol drinking habits can be presented and proven by clinical and laboratory indicators. The most important criterion for an appropriate problem solving of diagnosed alcohol dependence is an absolute and non-transient abstinence from alcohol. In line with the diagnostics of exculpation, the normalization of the laboratory parameters of alcohol abuse for which the client showed sensitivity during the period of his drinking should selectively and individually be examined in the medical assessment. Ethylglucuronide (EtG) is a reliable parameter to show renunciation of alcohol use. The period of suspended driving license should be used to evoke a change in the client's attitude in conjunction with inspections via valid markers of substance (ab)use. Considering these points, the change of drinking habits can be assessed in a better and more valid way during a medico-psychological examination (medizinisch-psychologische Untersuchung - MPU).
