Abstract

Twenty-five persons were given 1 g ethanol per kilogram of body weight, within periods of 90 and 10 minutes. Measurements of the breath alcohol with the Atalmeter of Adrian and Borkenstein were made every twenty minutes up to 240 minutes after the beginning of alcohol consumption. During the phase of absorption no unqualified and unlimited conclusion can be drawn from the ethanol concentration regarding the venous concentration of alcohol. In this phase the difference between the direct and the indirect values of alcohol concentration depend on the intensity of drinking and on the end of the drinking period. Due to this reason there is still no available indirect method of measurement for application in forensic practice as an alternative to the direct venous determination of alcohol concentration in the blood. Adrian and Borkenstein's Atalmeter is, however, taking into consideration all the experimental conditions, a useful tool in pharmacokinetic and epidemiological alcohol research.
