Abstract

In a 7 year field study, which consisted of 13 information and advisory groups for drunk drivers, data was collected on the participants' drinking history, diagnosis and appropriate attitudes towards drunk driving. The usual evaluation procedure showed some shortcomings of the normal diagnostic tools, which meant their properties had to be examined more closely. A factor analysis therefore carried out revealed 3 factors which we called 'centering' (factor 1), 'physical addiction' (factor 2) and 'excessive drinking or intoxication' (factor 3). Some regular time patterns became apparent: changes occurred primarily in factor 3, which was followed by factor 1, which preceded factor 2. With the given family histories the analysis shows a significant relation between factor 1 of ICD- 10 and physical addiction. The maximum BAC detected could only be predicted to a certain extent. It varied significantly with the described factors 1 and 3 of ICD- 10, but not with factor 2. We found a significant reaction between BAC and diagnostics of addiction. However, prognosis based on this relation contain errors and are therefore not suitable for the reliable distinction between 'addictive' and 'excessive' drinking behaviour in individual cases. No significant difference could be detected between a first time offender and a repeat offender with regard to their drinking history or their addiction diagnose.
